Department Profile

The Department of Biotechnology of Thanthai Hans Roever College was established in 2002. The department offers B.Sc., M.Sc., and M.Phil. programmes in Biotechnology. All the basic infrastructural facilities needed for conducting teaching and research programmes in different areas of Biotechnology have been developed in the department. Totally 10 batches of students have completed their U.G, P.G and M.Phil. degree courses respectively and are working in several prestigious intuitions and industries. Ph.D. programme is also offered form this academic year 2014 - 2015. Thus currently Our Department offers B.Sc., M. Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Biotechnology. The areas of research specialization in the department include microbial technology, enzyme technology, plant biotechnology, bioprocess development and biotechnological control of vector. The Department is also undertaking research projects of national importance in the field of biotechnology and obtained funds from various agencies such as University Grants Commission (UGC) and Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST). A total of 35 research papers have been published by our faculty as well as our students in national and international journals. Biotechnology department has successfully organized refresher courses, national and international seminars and a training programme in Biotechnology and trained teachers from different affiliated colleges and university departments. Due to this excellent quality teaching program, this Department has been able to generate excellent human resources in Biotechnology. The department has an excellent alumni support. The alumni have been guiding the present students with respect to the placements, studies as well as summer trainings.


  • Generate adequate human resources trained in the multi-disciplinary field of Biotechnology to meet the requirement of trained personnel for the promotion of Biotechnology in India.

  • Equip students with theoretical and practical understanding of contemporary Biology and Biotechnology so that they can pursue research in frontier areas in Biotechnology.

Program outcome

Students those who are enrolling with Bachelor & Master of Science use to learn the basic knowledge about the art of creative technology along with science. This course of B.Sc, M.Sc& M.Phil includes respective modules of theory and practical in relative field of science.

Program Specific Outcome

Biotechnologyis a field of applied biology that involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine and other fields requiring by products.

Course Outcome

  • Understand the foundational concepts of molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, plant & animal biotechnology, cell Biology, rDNA technology and how these impact biotechnology research and development in the diverse fields that span healthcare and agriculture.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic laboratory skills common to clinical and non-clinical research laboratories, including aseptic technique, making accurate and precise measurements using balances and macro and micro-pipetting, using a microscope, preparing solutions, operating Current instrumentation, preparing samples for various analyses and maintaining a proper scientific laboratory notebook.
  • Design, perform and analyze results of experiments using basic molecular biology methodologies and recombinant DNA techniques, including agarose and poly acryl amide gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme digestion, bacterial transformations, plasmid DNA protein expression, PCR and tissue culture.
  • Apply the fundamentals of molecular biology theories, methodologies and techniques by critically analyzing, interpreting, and presenting a recent and relevant scientific research paper that has been published in a refereed scientific journal.
